What's New: Cut the
Crap
In December 2004, MPC launched an initiative to protect the area’s sidewalks,
streets, and parks from a pesky problem: droppings from dogs and pigeons. A
source of frequent complaints from local residents, this particular kind of
litter,
MPC believes, makes the neighborhood
a less inviting place for residents
and visitors alike.
The Cut the Crap campaign kicked off
with the purchase of two “dogi-pot”
plastic bag dispensers, installed in Williamsbridge
Oval Park, to provide dog
owners with a convenient way of disposing of their pets’
waste. As the measures
prove successful, MPC plans to place more dispensers throughout Norwood, Bedford
Park, North Fordham and University Heights. Additionally, the corporation has
brought in workers from Partners in Grime to eliminate pigeon droppings by power
washing the sidewalk near the Mosholu Parkway train station – another service
MPC hopes to expand in the future.
Finally, MPC is using the Cut the
Crap
campaign to rededicate
itself to two
issues that have
always been close to its heart:
tree health and trash clean-up.
MPC has acted as a voice for
preserving existing trees and
planting new ones,
and will
continue those efforts, along with
a new focus on better maintenance
of
trees and other plants in nearby
parks. MPC and the
Norwood
News
continue to
work tirelessly
to remind local Bronxites to throw
their litter in cans, not on
the ground.
With support from
Norwood News
readers and other proud Bronx residents, MPC is
confident that it can get rid of the “crap” – and bring in more beauty – for the
enjoyment of us all!
