Quality of Life: Parks Bronx River Force. Although the Bronx River is the only freshwater river in New York City, and therefore a vital environmental and recreational resource for the borough, inadequate attention and long-term barriers to access have prevented it from fulfilling its great potential. The Bronx River Alliance, a partnership of community, governmental and environmental organizations, aims to restore the river and its rightful place in the public eye. In 2003, MPC added to that partnership the Bronx River Force, a team of eight students from the Bronx Aerospace Academy, hosted in nearby Evander Childs High School. The River Force supports the actions of the Alliance by learning the history and geography of this Bronx landmark, testing for water quality, planting trees to revitalize the river’s original ecosystem, and working to inform the population at large about the river’s place in the community. As part of the River Force agenda, MPC has sought out and obtained funding for a canoeing program, which will provide River Force participants (and, eventually, the community at large) with firsthand knowledge of the opportunities for play and learning that the Bronx River has to offer.
